Oil pulling may sound odd for those unfamiliar with what it is, but you would be surprised with the many benefits it brings. The method of oil pulling isn’t new, it’s an ancient practice of maintaining oral health. Today, it’s a growing trend. I’ve discussed the benefits of coconut oil pulling before. This time, I’ll talk about how to do coconut oil pulling properly.
Oil pulling is also known as oil swishing for those who are confused between the two terms. There are many benefits you can gain from performing this procedure and is especially helpful for those who would do just about anything when it comes to hygiene and beauty. Here’s everything you need to know about it including steps on how to perform it yourself.
As stated before, it’s also known as oil swishing and here’s why: this procedure requires you to swish the oil within your mouth like a mouthwash. This method is used for detoxifying and cleansing your teeth and gums by swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes. This works similarly like washing dirty dishes. Oil swishing literally sucks or pulls the dirt out of your mouth, keeping away bacteria that can cause cavities and diseases. This procedure can help lower the risk of the following:
It’s a rather straightforward procedure wherein all you have to do is swish a couple of teaspoons of oil in your mouth for about 20 minutes and spit it out just like mouthwash. For best results, it is preferred to do oil pulling during morning, before eating or drinking anything.
Note: To properly melt the coconut oil, place a small amount of the oil into a small bowl and submerge it a little within a larger bowl that is filled with hot water. Make sure that no water goes in and wait for the oil to liquefy.
Be sure to swish the oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes since this is the best amount of time it would take for the oil to break through plaque and bacteria but not that long enough for our body to start re-absorbing the toxins. It is important to note that as you starting swishing, the liquid will start getting milky since it is mixing with saliva during this time. It should be creamy-white when you spit it out afterwards. For those who aren’t used to oil pulling, it may be difficult to do this for a full 20 minutes so don’t stress too much about it. It’s fine to swish for about 5-10 minutes during the first few tries.
The oil can clog up and thicken your drainage and pipes. It is best to spit out in a trash can. Be sure NOT to swallow the oil. Remember, it’s full of bacteria and toxins.
Don’t just walk away without rinsing your mouth with water after all that swishing. Be sure to get any remaining oil out of your mouth with some warm water.
For those who are willing to try this method, you will surely not regret it. You can feel the results right after. Coconut oil is a great oil for oil pulling since it is a natural antibacterial and has a much milder taste compared to the others. For those who are sensitive with coconut products, it is much preferable to use sesame oil instead. Remember, organic virgin coconut oil is always the best kind to use rather than the refined ones.Tags: coconut oil, coconut oil pulling, oil pulling, oral care, oral health
